Support And Advocacy: Reaching Out
Writers Guild Kenya works to respond to SDG 5, particularly on increasing literacy levels and inculcating the culture of Life long learning. This is how we do it:
- We partner with the Kenyan Ministry of Education, local schools, religious institutions and NGOs working on literacy initiatives.
- We collaborate with libraries, booksellers, and publishers to increase access to books and reading materials.
- We engage with media organizations to raise awareness about the importance of literacy and lifelong learning.
Services:
On Literacy Programs, we:
- Develop and pilot reading programs tailored to different age groups and needs.
- Train volunteers and our members to conduct reading sessions in schools and communities.
- Advocate for increased government funding and resources for literacy programs.
On Lifelong Learning Initiatives, we:
- Organize workshops and seminars on diverse topics relevant to various demographics, promoting lifelong learning across different interests.
- Partner with online learning platforms to offer discounted or free access to courses for members and the community.
- Advocate for policies that support and encourage lifelong learning opportunities for all Kenyans.
On Content Creation and Distribution, we:
- Create engaging and culturally relevant reading materials for children and adults.
- Partner with local media outlets to publish articles, stories, and poems promoting the joy and benefits of reading.
- Translate existing literary works into local languages to increase accessibility for diverse communities.
On Advocacy and Awareness Campaigns, we:
- Organize public awareness campaigns highlighting the importance of literacy and lifelong learning.
- Lobby decision-makers to implement policies that promote access to books and educational resources.
- Partner with celebrities and influencers to champion the cause of literacy and lifelong learning.
